Jig Hook

Pick up a size 14 and look at the eye. It’s not bent straight back like a dry fly hook—it angles upward at 60 degrees. This isn’t a design quirk. It’s the defining feature of a jig hook, engineered to fish heavy nymphs and streamers in fast current without snagging on the bottom. When you add a tungsten bead to the eye, the fly rides inverted: hook point up, bead down. The result? You bounce along cobblestone river bottoms without losing flies every third cast.

Why Jig Hooks Changed Euro Nymphing

Traditional nymph hooks hang point-down. When they drag across rocks, the point catches and you break off. Jig hooks solved this by flipping the orientation. The 60-degree upturned eye acts as a pivot point. Add a slotted tungsten bead, and physics takes over: the weight rides at the front, the point angles upward, and the fly tumbles through pocket water like a natural insect.

This design became essential in European competition fishing, where anglers need to dredge deep runs without constant snags. Now it’s standard for any serious nymph angler fishing freestone rivers or technical tailwaters.

Barbless by Design

We built these hooks without barbs for three reasons:

  • Faster Hook Sets: In euro nymphing, you’re feeling for subtle ticks on the line. A barbless point penetrates instantly—no hesitation, no flex.
  • Less Fish Damage: When a trout shakes its head in fast current, a barbed hook tears tissue. A barbless hook works free cleanly, increasing survival rates in catch-and-release waters.
  • Safer Unhooking: Jig hooks often catch fish deep (they’re fished subsurface). A barbless point backs out with gentle pressure—no forceps wrestling in the current.

Black Oxide Coating: Durability Without Weight

The black finish isn’t paint or enamel—it’s a controlled oxidation layer bonded to the steel surface. This process creates a thin rust-resistant barrier without adding bulk or dulling the point. After a day on the water, rinse the hooks in freshwater and air-dry. The coating will protect against corrosion season after season.

What You Can Tie on Jig Hooks

Jig hooks are built for subsurface flies—nymphs, emergers, and small streamers that fish deep. Here’s what works on each size:

Size #10 (Shank: 15.7mm | Gape: 6.4mm)

  • Perdigon Nymphs: Heavy tungsten-bodied flies for deep fast water.
  • Pat’s Rubber Legs: Stonefly nymph imitation for pocket water.
  • Woolly Bugger: Streamer pattern for trout and smallmouth bass.

Size #12 (Shank: 14mm | Gape: 6mm)

  • Pheasant Tail Nymph: Classic mayfly nymph for all seasons.
  • Hare’s Ear Nymph: Buggy profile triggers aggressive takes.
  • Copper John: Flashy attractor nymph for stocked waters.

Size #14 (Shank: 12.9mm | Gape: 5.3mm)

  • Frenchie: Hot-spot nymph designed for euro nymphing competitions.
  • Rainbow Warrior: Flashy nymph for tailwaters and spring creeks.
  • Zebra Midge: Minimalist midge larva for technical fishing.

Size #16 (Shank: 11.8mm | Gape: 5.3mm)

  • RS2: Baetis emerger for selective trout.
  • Jig Midge: Subsurface midge pattern for winter fishing.
  • Surveyor: Lightweight nymph for shallow riffles.

Size #18 (Shank: 10.1mm | Gape: 4.7mm)

  • Micro Mayfly: Tiny nymph for ultra-technical spring creeks.
  • Thread Midge: Minimal profile for pressured fish.
  • Jig Emerger: Low-riding pattern for flat-water tailouts.

Pro Tip: Pairing Beads with Jig Hooks

Use slotted tungsten beads designed for jig hooks. The slot allows the bead to sit against the 60-degree eye without rotating. Standard round-hole beads will spin and tangle your leader. Match bead size to hook size:

  • #10 Hook: 3.5mm or 4mm slotted bead
  • #12 Hook: 3mm or 3.5mm slotted bead
  • #14 Hook: 2.5mm or 3mm slotted bead
  • #16 Hook: 2mm or 2.5mm slotted bead
  • #18 Hook: 2mm slotted bead

Fish deep. Stay sharp. Release clean.
