The “Old School” Secret Weapon
Before dry flies became popular, anglers relied on the Soft Hackle Wet Fly to catch the most fish. Why? Because trout feed subsurface 90% of the time. This pattern features a long, webby soft hackle collar that collapses when pulled against the current and “puffs” open when paused. This pulsing action mimics a struggling insect (Emerger) trying to break through the surface film—an easy meal trout can’t resist.
Two Proven Colorways in One Pack
Our assortment covers the two most critical spectrums of aquatic insects:
- Green Wire Rib (The Caddis): Mimics the bright green body of a Pupa or Caddis emerger. Perfect for Spring and early Summer evenings.
- Yellow/Gold Wire Rib (The Attractor): Represents a Pale Morning Dun (PMD) or simply acts as a high-contrast attractor in stained water.
Tactics: The “Down and Across” Swing
You don’t need complex casting to fish this.
The Swing: Cast 45 degrees downstream, let the line tighten, and allow the current to swing the fly across the river.
The Takes: Hold on tight! Strikes on wet flies are often violent because the fish is chasing a moving target. The heavy wire hook is designed to handle these aggressive hits without bending.
Common Questions (FAQ)
Do I use floatant on this?
No. This is a wet fly designed to sink slightly. You want it 1-6 inches below the surface.
What does the wire rib do?
The wire rib serves two purposes: it adds durability to the body (protecting it from trout teeth) and adds a tiny amount of weight to help the fly break the surface tension.
Is this a Nymph or a Dry Fly?
Neither. It’s a “Wet Fly” or “Emerger.” It fishes in the transition zone between the bottom and the top, where fish feel safest eating.

1 review for Classic Soft Hackle Wet Fly (Wire Ribbed)
Man these soft hackles just flat out work. Been swinging them on my local tailwater all fall and the trout absolutely smash them. The wire ribbing gives them a nice segmented look and they hold up way better than the ones I used to tie myself. Hooks are sticky sharp. Grabbed two packs and already thinking about ordering more before winter.
