Why Elk Hair Caddis Belongs in Every Trout Box
When adult caddisflies hatch and skitter across the surface, trout go into feeding frenzy mode. The elk hair caddis is the go-to pattern for matching this hatch—and it works in situations where other dry flies sink or drag. Whether you’re fishing a spring creek in Montana or a freestone river in Colorado, this pattern’s natural buoyancy and lifelike silhouette trigger strikes from selective trout that ignore artificial-looking flies.
What makes Rivfly’s version different? We use premium natural elk hair for the wing—not synthetic substitutes. Elk hair is naturally hollow, which traps micro air bubbles and keeps the fly riding high even in turbulent water. The dubbed fur body creates subtle segmentation that mimics a real caddis abdomen, and the palmered brown hackle adds both flotation and the “leggy” movement trout expect to see.
Engineering & Durability
Dry flies take a beating. Every strike compresses the hackle. Every false cast wears the dubbing. That’s why we reinforce the body with a copper wire rib—it locks the dubbed fur in place and prevents unraveling after multiple fish. The standard dry fly hook features a sharp point and bronze finish that resists corrosion in both freshwater and the occasional saltwater flat.
The down-eye hook design isn’t just tradition—it creates a gap angle that improves hook-up ratios on short-strike fish. When a trout slashes at the fly and misses the body, the exposed hook point is positioned to catch the corner of the mouth during the turn.
Match the Hatch & Tactical Applications
Seasonality: Caddisflies hatch from late spring through early fall, with peak activity in June-August. However, the elk hair caddis works year-round as a searching pattern—even when no hatch is visible, trout recognize it as “food” and will eat opportunistically.
Target Species: Primarily trout (rainbow, brown, cutthroat, brook), but also effective on grayling, smallmouth bass in streams, and panfish during surface feeding.
Presentation Techniques:
- Dead Drift in Riffles: Cast upstream and let the fly tumble naturally through broken water—the elk hair keeps it visible even in whitewater.
- Skittering Retrieve: Strip the fly across the surface to imitate an egg-laying caddis female—deadly during evening hatches.
- Indicator Rig: Use a larger #12 elk hair caddis as a strike indicator with a nymph dropper 18-24 inches below.
Size Selection Guide
| Size | Hook Length | Best Conditions | Target Insects |
|---|---|---|---|
| #12 | 14.5mm | Spring runoff, fast/deep water, low light | Large caddis, October caddis, grasshoppers |
| #14 | 12.5mm | All-around size, normal summer flows | Standard caddis species (most common) |
| #16 | 10.5mm | Summer low water, clear conditions, selective fish | Small caddis, midges, micro mayflies |
| #18 | 8mm | Technical spring creeks, heavily fished waters | Micro caddis, BWO emergers (crossover use) |
Pro Tip: If unsure, start with #14—it covers 80% of caddis hatches across North America and is visible enough for anglers with aging eyes.
Which Pack Should You Choose?
New to Elk Hair Caddis? Start with the Core Sizes (6-pack). You get 3 flies in #14 and 3 in #16—the two sizes that match 90% of caddis hatches across North America. This gives you flexibility to adjust for water speed and insect size without committing to a full mixed assortment.
Already know your go-to size? Choose a Single Size (6-pack) to restock your box with exactly what works on your home water.
Want full seasonal coverage? The All Seasons (12-pack) includes #12 for spring runoff, extra #16 for peak summer, and #18 for technical situations—ideal for guides, travelers, or anglers who fish diverse water types.
| Pack Type | Quantity | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Single Size (6-pack) | 6 flies of one size | Restocking your go-to size, targeted hatch matching |
| Mixed Sizes (12-pack) | 3×#12, 3×#14, 4×#16, 2×#18 | First-time buyers, full-season coverage, travel kits |
Why the Mixed Pack weights toward #14 and #16? Because 90% of caddis hatches fall in the 10-13mm range (equivalent to #14-#16 hooks). We give you more of what you’ll actually use, while still including #12 for big water and #18 for technical situations.
Common Questions
Q: Does this fly need floatant?
A: For the first few casts, the natural oils in the elk hair provide enough flotation. After 3-4 fish (or if the fly sinks), apply a powder desiccant (like Frog’s Fanny) or gel floatant (like Gink). Avoid liquid floatants—they mat down the elk hair and reduce buoyancy.
Q: Can I fish this pattern subsurface?
A: Technically yes, but it’s not ideal. The elk hair wing wants to float, so you’d need heavy split shot or a sinking leader. If you want a caddis pattern for nymphing, consider a Soft Hackle Wet Fly or Caddis Pupa instead.
Q: How long does the hackle last?
A: With the copper wire rib reinforcing the body, the fly maintains its shape for 20-30 fish in normal conditions. The hackle will compress after repeated strikes, but you can “fluff” it back up by steaming the fly over a kettle or using a hair dryer on low heat.
Q: Why brown hackle instead of grizzly or dun?
A: Brown hackle closely matches the mottled legs of natural caddisflies. While some anglers prefer grizzly for visibility, brown is more imitative—which matters when fishing over selective trout that have seen dozens of flies.

4 reviews for Elk Hair Caddis Dry Fly
Good quality overall. The elk hair is stacked nice and even. One fly out of six had a slightly crooked wing but it still fished fine. Would buy again.
I’ve tied my own EHC for years so I know what a good one looks like. These are honestly well-tied. The hackle wraps are tight and even, body dubbing isn’t sloppy. Only complaint is I wish they offered a size 12-14 is a little small for the caddis hatches on my home water. Still ordering again.
Classic pattern, but the materials here are noticeably better than what I’ve been buying locally. The elk hair is clean and flares properly — actually sheds water instead of soaking it up. Fished it on the Gallatin last August and it just floated all day with minimal dressing. Bought more.
These float like corks. Fished a size 14 on the Deschutes last week and couldn’t keep the rainbows off it. Solid tie for the price.
