The Mid-Summer Solution

When the heat of July and August slows down aquatic hatches, trout start looking up for clumsy land insects falling from the banks. This foam ant and beetle assortment is built for exactly that window.

Unlike traditional fur-based ants that soak up water and sink after a few drifts, these patterns use high-density closed-cell foam to keep riding high in the surface film, regardless of chop or current speed.

Built to Stay Visible

Visibility is the real challenge with small black terrestrial patterns. Both the beetle and the ant have a fluorescent orange sighter on the back, so you can track the drift in low evening light or heavy surface glare. The body is 2mm closed-cell foam, durable enough to handle multiple fish without shredding. The X-pattern rubber legs add a bit of twitching movement that gives the fly some life on the water instead of sitting completely still.

How to Fish It

Don’t be gentle with the cast. Unlike a delicate mayfly, a terrestrial should land with a distinct plop, the same way a real ant or beetle falling off a branch would. Trout in summer get conditioned to that sound and often key in on it, so a soft, careful landing can actually work against you here.

Use the #10 size to anchor a dry-dropper rig, or fish it solo tight against overhanging trees and undercut banks. For a dropper, a small Zebra Midge or Pheasant Tail Nymph hung 12 to 18 inches behind it on 4X or 5X Fluorocarbon Tippet covers the subsurface angle while the foam fly handles the top.

Pairing a Beetle and an Ant on the same leader, beetle in front, ant trailing on a longer dropper, is also a common approach on bigger rivers where you want two different silhouettes working at once.

Common Questions

Does this need floatant? No. The closed-cell foam body floats on its own without any treatment.

What season is best for this fly? Terrestrials work from late spring through the first frost, but they’re most important in mid to late summer when aquatic hatches slow down and trout shift to land insects as a steady food source.

Why are there two different shapes in this pack? Ants and beetles both fall into the water all summer, and trout don’t seem to favor one over the other consistently. Carrying both covers more water without needing to guess.

Is the hook barbed? Yes, these come with a barbed hook for holding power.

The hi-vis dot makes them so easy to track on the water. I’m not the youngest angler anymore and my eyes aren’t what they used to be, so that detail actually matters a lot to me. Fish eat them confidently too, no hesitation. Great assortment of sizes.
