When in Doubt, Throw a Griffith’s Gnat
You see fish rising, but there are no obvious insects on the water. This is the classic scenario for the Griffith’s Gnat. It mimics a “midge cluster”—a ball of tiny insects mating on the surface film. For a trout, eating one by one is inefficient; eating a cluster is a feast. This pattern is widely considered the ultimate “slump buster” for difficult days on the water.
Upgraded Visibility & Materials
Traditional versions of this fly are notorious for being hard to see. We fixed that.
- The Orange Hot Spot: We added a fluorescent thread head. It acts as a beacon for your eyes but looks like an egg sac or trigger point to the fish.
- Peacock Herl Body: We use premium iridescent peacock herl. Unlike synthetic dubbing, natural herl catches the light and creates a lifelike shimmer that fish can’t resist.
- Premium Hackle: As seen in the macro photos, our hackle is wrapped tightly and evenly. This creates surface tension footprints that look exactly like insect legs trapped in the film.
Fishing Tactics: Size Matters
Different sizes imitate different food sources. We recommend carrying a range:
- Sizes #12-14: Imitates a large cluster of mating midges. Use these in choppy water or riffles.
- Sizes #16-18: The standard size for most winter and spring midge hatches.
- Size #20: Imitates a single adult midge. Use this on flat, glassy pools for spooky fish.

1 review for Griffith’s Gnat Midge Cluster
Midge cluster fishing is its own skill set and having a fly that actually looks right matters. The peacock herl on these has good sheen, the palmered hackle isn’t too dense — fish can still see the body underneath. Deadly on flat water when fish are sipping.
