The Desert Island Fly: Parachute Adams
Ask any guide: “If you were stranded on a trout stream and could only have one fly, what would it be?” The answer is almost always the Parachute Adams. It doesn’t look exactly like one specific bug; instead, it looks “buggy” enough to be almost anything. Whether there is a Hatch of Mayflies, Midges, or Caddis, or even when nothing is hatching at all, this fly catches fish.
Engineering the “Low-Rider” Advantage
Traditional dry flies ride high on the tips of their hackle. Our Parachute Adams is engineered differently based on the anatomy shown in the macro photos:
- Horizontal Hackle: The grizzly hackle is wrapped around the post, not the hook shank. This allows the fly to land softly and sit flat in the surface film.
- Better Hookups: Because the body sits lower in the water, the fish doesn’t have to break the surface to eat it. This results in confident takes and fewer missed strikes.
- High Visibility: The white Poly-Yarn post acts as a sighter, allowing you to track the drift even in broken water or low light.
Material Durability
We build our flies to last. As seen in the close-ups, we use a Fine Gold Wire Ribbing to segment the body. This isn’t just for looks—it binds the dubbing tightly to the hook shank, preventing the fly from unraveling after catching a trout with sharp teeth.

3 reviews for Parachute Adams Dry Fly
I love Adams
If you only carry one dry fly, it’s the Parachute Adams. These are tied the way it should be tied — the post is upright, the hackle is the right color and density, the tail isn’t too long or too short. I’ve fished PA’s from a dozen different sources and these are in the top tier.
Bought these for a Wyoming trip not knowing exactly what I’d encounter. The Adams worked on every piece of water I hit — cutthroat in mountain lakes, browns in the canyon, everything. The pattern is proven but it only works when it’s tied right. These are tied right.
