The “Unfair Advantage” for Selective Trout.
Winter and Spring fishing is a game of extremes. Fish are either ignoring everything in crystal clear tailwaters or aggressively feeding on “junk” in muddy runoff. The Rivfly Tailwater Master is a tactical collection of winter trout flies designed to handle both scenarios using the professional “Tandem Rig” strategy.
The Strategy: “Anchor & Sniper” (Tandem Rig)

We engineered this kit to fish the entire water column by pairing a heavy attractor fly with a precise micro-nymph.
1. The Anchor (Heavy Attractors)
Role: Get Down & Agitate
In cold water, you must hit the bottom. We included heavy Stonefly Nymphs (#10) and silicone Squirmy Worms (#12). These large profiles act as your “Anchor,” dragging the leader down quickly while triggering aggression strikes during high-water runoff.
2. The Sniper (Micro Precision)
Role: Fool the Educated Fish
Tailwater trout see thousands of flies. To fool them, you need to go small. Our #20 Micro Nymphs feature a slim, epoxy-coated profile (Perdigon style) that sinks like a stone but looks like a tiny morsel. We also included #18 Griffith’s Gnats for the mid-day midge hatch.
3. The Spawn Trigger (Egg Flies)
Role: Match the Hatch (Feb – April)
During the Rainbow Trout spawn, high-protein eggs are the primary food source. Our Nuke Eggs (#14) feature a translucent veil that mimics the natural “slime” of a real egg underwater. It is deadly when drifted behind a spawning redd.
Visual Engineering: Why These Work
- UV-Active Materials: The Squirmy Worms and Beads reflect UV light, making them visible in murky spring runoff.
- Tungsten Beads: Unlike cheap brass, our nymphs use Tungsten to reach the strike zone instantly without adding split shots.
- Barbless Hooks (Select Models): The Perdigon nymphs are tied on barbless jig hooks for better penetration and fish safety.
Common Questions (FAQ)
How do I set up a Tandem Rig?
Tie the heavy fly (Worm or Stonefly) to your leader. Then, tie 12-18 inches of 5X or 6X tippet to the hook bend. Tie the Micro Nymph (#20) or Egg to the end. The big fly gets you deep; the small fly gets the eat.
Why use #20 hooks?
In winter, trout metabolism slows down, and they feed on tiny midges. A standard #14 nymph often looks too big and unnatural. The #20 is essential for technical tailwaters.

I know, I know — San Juan worms aren't "real" fly fishing. Tell that to the fish. I fish the San Juan River regularly in the winter and these worms are tied better than anything I've bought locally. The material is the right softness, the color is accurate, and the hook isn't buried so deep that you miss strikes. The rest of the kit is solid too but honestly I bought it mostly for the worms and I'm not disappointed.
The Clinch in January is no joke. Cold, clear, educated fish, and you need the right midge and soft hackle game or you’re going home empty. I’ve wasted money on “winter kits” before that were just repackaged generic stuff. This one is different — you can tell someone who actually fishes tailwaters in winter picked these patterns. The zebra midges are tied correctly (proportions matter on this stuff), the San Juan worms are the right thickness, and the soft hackles have good movement even in slow cold-water presentations.
