Standard wet fly hook geometry matters more than most tyers realise — and the problem is usually the hook, not the tyer.
The Rivfly Standard Wet Fly Hook uses a classic round bend with a straight shank — the same profile that traditional soft hackle and wet fly patterns were designed around. Straight shank gives you room to wrap a clean body without crowding the eye. Round bend positions the point correctly when the fly swings in the current.
Standard Wet Fly Hook: What Patterns It’s Built For
Soft Hackle Wet Flies: March Brown, Partridge & Orange, Spider patterns. Shank length gives room for a proper dubbed body and hackle collar without crowding the eye.
Traditional Wet Flies: Leadwing Coachman, Royal Coachman Wet, Alder, Wickham’s Fancy — classic patterns designed for this exact hook profile.
Unweighted Nymphs: Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear tied without a bead head. For tungsten weighted versions use our Barbless Jig Hook. For scud and pupa imitations use our Curved Scud & Pupa Hook.
