Tarpon Flies

The Silver King Demands Precision—And Visibility

When tarpon flies hit the water at dawn in the Florida Keys, you have seconds to trigger a strike before the school moves on. Traditional streamers disappear in tannin-stained backcountry water or under overcast skies. Rivfly’s UV Glow Tarpon Flies solve this with photoluminescent fibers that charge under sunlight or UV light, creating a visible target in low-visibility conditions. The 145mm baitfish profile mimics mullet and pilchards—the primary forage base for megalops atlanticus across the Gulf Coast and Caribbean. Whether you’re sight-casting to rolling fish or blind-stripping channels, these tarpon flies stay in the strike zone longer with lifelike swimming action from layered synthetic fibers.

Engineering for Saltwater Punishment

Tarpon average 80-150 lbs and fight like submarines. Cheap hooks corrode after one session; weak epoxy cracks on the first jump. We engineered these flies with saltwater-grade stainless steel hooks (Size 6/0) that resist galvanic corrosion in tropical brine. The 3D eyes are sealed under two-part epoxy resin—the same material used in marine coatings—to survive gill-plate abrasion and multiple strikes. The gape measures 22.2mm with a 53.4mm shank, providing the hookset leverage needed to penetrate tarpon’s bony jaw structure. Synthetic bucktail and flashabou fibers won’t rot like natural materials, and the UV-reactive strands retain glow potency for 50+ fish.

Match the Hatch & Tactical Color Selection

Tarpon feed opportunistically, but color matters in varying water conditions:

  • Blue/White: Clear water (Boca Grande Pass, Key West flats). High contrast mimics healthy baitfish.
  • Pink/White: Overcast skies or stained water (Everglades backcountry). Highly visible, triggers aggression.
  • Tan: Natural light, sandy bottom environments (Homosassa, Crystal River). Matches mullet coloration.
  • Chartreuse/White: Tannin-stained water (mangrove channels). Orange belly flash mimics wounded prey.

Presentation Tip: Strip-pause-strip with 12-18 inch pulls. The glow body creates a “breathing” effect as fibers compress and expand, triggering predatory instinct even when tarpon are lethargic in warm water (85°F+).

Common Questions

Q: How long does the UV glow last?
A: After 30 seconds of sunlight exposure, the glow remains visible for 3-5 minutes in low light. Recharge by briefly exposing to sun or UV flashlight between casts.

Q: Will the hook rust in saltwater?
A: No. We use marine-grade stainless steel with passive oxide layer protection. Rinse with freshwater after each session and air-dry to maximize lifespan.

Q: Can I use this for other species?
A: Yes. Deadly effective for giant trevally, barracuda, snook, redfish, and freshwater pike/musky. The 6/0 hook handles fish up to 200 lbs.

Q: Do I need a wire leader?
A: For tarpon, use 60-80 lb fluorocarbon (their teeth are abrasive but not sharp). For barracuda/pike, use 30 lb wire.

Threw this at some rolling tarpon in the Keys and got a solid eat on my third cast. The profile is big and pushes water well. The UV glow really helps in low light early morning. Tied on a strong hook too — held up through a 20minutes fight no problem. Legit fly.

Big profile, pushes a lot of water, and that UV flash is something else. Exactly what you want when targeting large fish.
