Key Features

  • THE ULTIMATE SEARCHING PATTERN: Not sure what the fish are eating? This fly mimics almost every food source in the river.

  • Description

The Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear (GRHE) is arguably the most versatile nymph in fly fishing history. Unlike other flies that imitate one specific bug, the Hare's Ear looks like everything.

What it imitates:

It is a "suggestive" pattern. Its fuzzy, spiky appearance mimics Mayfly nymphs, Caddis larvae, Scuds (freshwater shrimp), and Sowbugs. To a trout, it simply looks like a delicious, high-protein snack.

Why it works this season:

In winter and early spring, trout hold deep and look for opportunistic meals. The spiky fibers of this fly create micro-vibrations in the water, while the gold bead reflects light, triggering aggression even in cold water.

When to use it:

  • Prospecting: When you arrive at the river and don't see any bugs hatching.
  • Rough Water: The buggy profile stands out well in faster currents (riffles and runs).

Which Color Should You Choose?

  • Natural (Tan/Grey): The All-Rounder This is the universal choice. It blends perfectly with sandy or rocky river bottoms. It is the #1 go-to color for clear water conditions or when you are exploring new waters.

  • Olive: The Vegetation Specialist Choose Olive when you are fishing in rivers with aquatic grass and weeds. It is also the specific color to use when you want to imitate Caddis larvae (which are often green) or Damselfly nymphs.

How to rig it:

  • The "Point" Fly: Use a larger #12 Hare's Ear as your heavy bottom fly, and trail a smaller nymph (like a Zebra Midge) behind it.
  • Dry-Dropper: Hang it 2-3 feet below a large foam dry fly to cover two water columns at once.
