Rivfly Copper John Nymph
The ultimate weighted nymph that gets down fast and stays deep. A must-have pattern for fast currents and deep pools.
SKU:NY-CJ-08-8-6P
Key Features
- GETS DOWN FAST: The combination of a brass bead and a fully wrapped copper wire body makes this one of the fastest sinking nymphs on the market.
- DOUBLE ATTRACTION: Features a flashy copper body and a reflective "Flashback" wing case that triggers strikes even in murky water.
- DURABLE ARMOR: The wire-wrapped body acts like armor, making this fly nearly indestructible against trout teeth.
- REALISTIC PROFILE: Perfectly imitates Mayfly and Stonefly nymphs, the primary food source for trout year-round.
- STRIKE ZONE ACCURACY: Because it sinks so quickly, it spends more time in the "feeding zone" near the bottom than lighter flies.

- Description
When fish are hugging the bottom and refusing to rise, you need a fly that can reach them. The Rivfly Copper John is widely regarded as the most effective nymph pattern ever invented. It cuts through the water column like a stone.
What it imitates:
This is a generalist pattern that mimics a wide variety of aquatic insects, primarily Stonefly Nymphs and Mayfly Nymphs. The segmented copper body looks just like a juicy insect larva.
Why it works this season:
In fast-moving water or during colder months, trout stay deep to conserve energy. Standard flies drift over their heads. The Copper John drops right in front of their nose, forcing a reaction bite.
When to use it:
- Fast Water: Use it in riffles and runs where lighter flies would get washed away.
- Deep Pools: Perfect for dredging the bottom of deep holes.
- As a "Dropper": Because it is heavy, it works great as the bottom fly in a multi-fly rig.
How to rig it (Pro Tip):
- Dry-Dropper Rig: Tie a large foam dry fly (like a Hopper) on top, and hang the Copper John 2-3 feet below it. The dry fly acts as a bobber, and the Copper John anchors the line.
- Euro Nymphing: This is a classic anchor fly for tight-line nymphing setups.
